Reviews
Few vegan options, and we ordered the spicy vegan ramen and it was not spicy. They told us that in order to make it spicy you had to pay an extra 50 cents, which I thought was odd. My sister got the chicken dumpling soup and said it was not good. Overall it was very expensive, the service was bad, and the ramen was not great.
I enjoyed Tanaka but it wasn’t the best ramen ever. I feel like it was missing something but I don’t know what exactly. I really liked the gyoza and edamame. The service was okay we had to ask for water a few times. Overall good and I would come back just not mind blowing.
One of the more authentic ramen I’ve had in Chicago! No frills, no fancy toppings just like the ones in Japan. I like that they also have various Japanese appetizers to go with their drinks. One small comment is it would be perfect if they had chili flakes, tsukemono, chili oil etc. on the table for extra seasonings!
My friend and I visited recently, and we both loved what we ordered. We opted for Tanaka because they had clearly marked vegetarian ramen, unlike some other ramen spots in the Lake View area.
They also have a clearly marked vegan ramen! Bonus points for having a vegetarian AND vegan choice.
The broth was really flavorful, and I'd go again in a heartbeat. I was a little disappointed that the veggie ramen didn't come with any eggs, but I'm sure I could have added a few a la carte.
FWIW, my friend said she didn't like ramen before coming here, and she left a ramen stan. So, thank you, Tanaka, for making her a believer.
I highly recommend for anyone in the area.
I recently visited Tanaka Ramen and had an amazing experience! The restaurant is cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. The menu had a great variety of options, and everything we ordered was delicious. The ramen was especially noteworthy - the broth was rich and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. I also appreciated that the restaurant offered vegetarian and gluten-free options. Overall, I highly recommend Tanaka Ramen to anyone looking for an authentic and satisfying Japanese dining experience. I can't wait to come back!
We went in February 19th, so hopefully some things have changed.
Honestly, the ramen here was very underwhelming. Compared to the other spots that we've been to, it was fairly below average. The staff helped you out and the atmosphere was nice. But the food itself was just very...bland.
I'd like to give this place a 2nd chance if I get the opportunity, but I'm not too sure
Really liked the ramen I had here! We were lucky to be there at a time when they had a buy one get one free offer. We got the rich garlic ramen, tanaka classic ramen, soft shell crab bun, calamari karaage, arabiku (?) sausage and the oreo creme brulee bubble tea. I loved the flavor in the broth of the rich garlic one and the sausage and calamari were really good! Service was quick, clean nice place, wasn’t too crowded when we went, would definitely recommend!
My favorite: rich garlic ramen with pork bone broth , thick noodles, and pork chasiu! Definitely the best thick noodles I've had in Chicago …
